Deana: Tuesday Archives with Val's Quilting Studio - Grandmother's Flower Garden

Tuesdays are a favorite linky day for me because Valerie at Val's Tuesday Archives  gives me a chance to reflect on past projects and dig them out of the closet.  Today's topic is "Granny Squares" and "Grandmother's Flower Garden".

I have never made a Granny Square block but I have a good start on two Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts.  Neither one is finished, and they are not on the list to work on in the near future either.

These are my two projects that are way on the back burner.

This one was a round robin where my friends each made me two flowers.  I think it will become a table topper.  Some pieces are just laying on the blue fabric, so if they are spaced funny, that is why.  This quilt is all out of Batiks --I love them!

Please excuse the wrinkles,  I just pulled it out of a box for this post.  This one is my own design; I call it "Grandmother's Overgrown Flower Garden", but I need to remove the border and start over because it is a mess.  I should have hand appliqued it,  but I got in a hurry and made a mess of machine applique.  Some day it will be all finished correctly.  I hope to market this pattern some day, so please do not copy it.  Thank you.

One thing I learned from this project is...
NEVER PUT A PROJECT AWAY THAT NEEDS TO BE PICKED OUT!  It is so hard to get going on it again.

Deana: Equilateral Triangle Quilts

Val's Quilting Studio is having a discussion on quilts with equilateral triangles.  I have a couple of designs that fit into this category so I wanted to link up.  I have lumped together several posts that show these quilts in a variety of colors.  The main design is based off an equilateral triangle variation.  I have also included my "brown bag" creation which is mostly made of equilateral triangles.  We mailed some fabrics we did not want anymore to a partner and then made a quilt out of the fabric we received.  It was fun!

Deana: A finish and Dear Jane Progress

Yippy I got another finish!  Below is a quilt for my daughter, Jessi.  I designed it several years ago and have made several since.  I call it "Hexagons in Rotation".  I did not put a lot of quilting in it but I am happy with the results none the less.  It still needs the hand work on the binding.

I have also made progress on Dear Jane.  Several of these blocks were made in May but I forgot to post them.  Here goes:

Top Row:
H7 Bennington Star has 25 pieces and was regular pieced.
H8 Eaton's Crossroads has 19 pieces and is paper pieced and appliqued.
H9 Snowflake Melt has 33 pieces and is entirely paper pieced.
H10 Ben's Bowtie has 26 pieces and is regular pieced.

Middle Row:
H11 Piercing Rays has 24 pieces and is paper pieced.
H12 Hannah Lou's Hearts has 5 pieces - applique
H13 Farm Fields has 7 pieces - paper pieced
I1 Ralph & Nelda's Wedding has 20 pieces - regular pieced

Bottom Row:
I2 Kaye's Courtyard has 13 pieces - regular pieced
I4 Stability has 25 pieces - regular pieced and applique
I5 Maria's Majesty has 6 pieces - applique
I11 Coyote Chase has 6 pieces - applique

TOTAL DEAR JANE PIECES TO DATE IS 2,316.

I took a couple of different angle pictures of all my completed Dear Jane blocks.  I am starting row 9 and there are 13 total.  I hope that if I make 2 blocks a week I can finish the main blocks this year.  The borders will have to be a 2015 project.

I piled my last three finished up on my dresser for a photo.  Man they look SO GOOD!   Those three quilts are years in the making.  The purple one went together within a year, but I purchased the fabric for it years before I even started it.  This is fun!
Today I am linking up with Fort Worth Fabric Studio's Friday Night Sew In.

A finish!

The Brown Bag Flickr Group is here.  You can see all the other brown bag quilts -- fun fun fun!

I finished my brown bag quilt just in time for the deadline.  I may go back and fill in some quilting in the navy border at a later date, and then again I may not.
This has been a fun project and best of all, I finished a UFO while I was at it.

Below is the back side. I used up the leftover blocks and some leftover green fabric from the top.

Mom's Hexagon's in Rotation quilted

I am so excited to have finished my "One thing, one week challenge".  It was to quilt Mom's queen-sized "Hexagon's in Rotation" quilt.  It seems that I've quilted a gazillion of them, but it was really fun.  The really crazy thing is that I have two of mine that still need quilted.  You can see them here and here.

I hope she likes it.

I hope to post better photos later.  It is challenging to get a good photo when there is only one person home to hold the quilt up.  Laying them on the floor just doesn't do them justice.

This quilt project was born at our Dorinda retreat in June.   It is a stack-n-wack quilt designed by yours truly using the Super 60 ruler by Sara Nephew.  It is so fun and so fast to make.

Below are some links to others I've quilted in the past:

Pink Hexagon quilt top FINISHED!

I finally have a new top finished.  I cannot believe it took me from June to the first day of October to just put borders on this beautiful project.  The colors are SO MUCH RICHER and more beautiful in person - bad lighting I suppose.  The blue and pink pieces are rich batiks.  I believe they add so much to this piece.

I designed this quilt in the early 2000s.  This is the third completed top for me and I've got another one close and an fifth all cut out.  This project is just FUN and EASY to make.

Original "Hexagons in Rotation"

This was the original "Hexagons in Rotation" quilt I designed in the early 2000s.  Here it sits with the basting threads (red of all colors) still holding it together.  The problem is that I quilted it so heavily that it will really take some time to finish it in the same manner I started it.  Also, this was probably one of the first quilts I ever attempted to machine quilt and I've improved so much.  I intend to give this one to my Aunt Dana as a gift.  She loves blue.
