For the Birds - top is done!!!

Borders were just finished up on this baby.  It measures 80" x 97", much larger than I set out to make.  I really wanted the bicycle border, and it needed to be wide.

My friend and I will be making a large bicycle to go on the back side of our "For the Birds" quilt.  I purchased this cute pattern and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.

I have also been contemplating the finish of my quilted barns. I found this Windmill pattern by the same designer as the bike. I fell quickly in love and decided my barns need a windmill.

I am pondering my Churn Dash quilt a lot of late as part of Chooky's SAL.  My brain is swimming with ideas, and Google and Pinterest have been searched.  One idea is to use them to frame some cute houses I bought a couple of months ago.  I may sew one up and see what I think before I officially decide.  Doing the SAL in this way would kill two birds with one stone - use my recent purchase while following the SAL.  On the other hand,  it would be fun to just make a churn dash quilt on its own without the houses.  The crazy side of me might actually do both.  What the heck - they are pretty simple blocks anyway.

Once they are churn dash framed, I am considering placing flowers between them.  The way they are below, the flowers overpower the houses.  I want the focus on the houses.  If the churn dash frame doesn't make them pop, I will find a simple block to go between them instead of the flowers.

I could also churn dash frame these cute chicken blocks as well.  Too many churn dash ideas.  It is super fun though.

Deana: final blocks made for my Block Lotto Winnings!

I was able to finish up the final four blocks needed for my Block Lotto quilt.  I won it in November and decided to add one more row.

Now I just need to sew the rows together and get a border on it.

I also picked a border off my barn block.  I am donating it as well as my house block to a quilt that will be auctioned off next month.  I need to bring the house block up to size, but that should be easy.

I also made a block for another Hive in my Stashbee.  I hope Heather likes it.  When the blocks are put together this quilt looks fabulous!

I am Queen Bee for my own hive this month.  I designed this block that I am calling Sweet Cherry Orange.  I fell in love with this color combination after making a block for someone else last year.  It is going to be a happy quilt.

Deana: Barns Quilted and my family loves me!

Look what I got in the mail this week!  My Sister Tracy made this for my daughter's wedding.  It is only the center, but she also cut and organized the rest of the quilt by sending it out to family members to piece.  Thank you Ann and Mom for doing so much work too!  My sisters, mom, and I will get together this week over fall break to finish it.  It is for my daughter who is getting married in mid December.  I could never have done it on my own and am so thankful to my sister and family for their loving help.  I should have a quilt top to show by the end of the week.  I hope to get it quilted and bound in time for the wedding.

I designed this quilt pattern for my other daughter's wedding which was in May.  I named it Jessi's Medallion for her, so I guess this one could be Jolynn's Medallion.  My son loves it too, so I will be making another one when he gets married someday.

Here is Jessi's quilt to let you see what the brown one will look like finished.

Also, I got my daughter's other wedding quilt quilted Saturday.  It only needs a binding - yay!  I did a simple and fast job of it since I am running out of time.

Now if I can just get the wedding finalized and keep up with my busy work schedule.

Deana: Val's Quilting Studio - Flying Geese

The other theme for Val's Quilting Studio today is flying geese.  I have chosen two to show.

The first is my silo.  This quilt was made as part of the Daughters of Dorinda (DOD) 2011 Mystery Project.  Every person in the group submitted a rule and then we all decided on a theme for our own quilts.  My theme was "The Quilted Barn".  The second month's rule was to put flying geese in it.  Well, I decided to put flying geese in my silo.  They are very tiny, and there are two rows of them.  Can you see them?  I paper pieced the silo.

I also made very small flying geese in my mini quilt border.  They are 1" x 2" finished.  This was crazy.  I wish I had done them larger so I would have finished the quilt sooner.  I also think it would have looked better larger.

Deana: Flowers

Val's Quilting studio's theme for today is flowers and flying geese.  I will do a separate post for the flying geese because there are so many photos in this post.

Here are my smallest flowers EVER.  I double fused the fabric and tacked them on with french knots.  This was a panel in my barn quilt for the DOD 2011 mystery project.

I made these flower blocks for the block lotto several years ago.

I did not win, but I did make more and put them as a border for my Autumn Flower Quilt.

I need to update the photo because the top is finished now.  This was a round robin.  I asked everyone in the group to make me a flower block of any size or style in autumn colors.
This is a quilt I made for my teenage daughter.  I love the large flowers on it.  Doesn't it look all teenagerish?

I quilted it in veriagated pastel colors. (The back)
This is a flower quilt I designer many years ago.  I sold many patterns, so I guess some other people liked it too.  I call it Lacy Daisies and it has hand embroidery on it.

And here is another flower I designed.  I was having fun with free style curvy piecing.

Deana: Buckskin Mare getting closer

Val's Quilting Studio is having a linky party for any quilt related to "farms".  I think my Buckskin Mare fits the bill.  Now I only have the mane along the neckline left -- yay!  I will be so happy when the center is done so I can get moving on the piecing around her.

I was raised on a farm with horses.  My father is a great horseman and loves paints and quarter horses.  My husband and son enjoy them too, so we play with them a little.  My husband and I have an annual 4 day date into a roadless area where only hikers and horses are allowed.  We pack all our gear on the pack horses and ride in a few hours -- love the peace on the mountain and the beauty of nature.

Along the "Farm" theme, I am also showing my Barn Quilt.  I love old barns and made it my theme for the Daughters of Dorinda 2011 Mystery project.  It was fun to design and create but still needs to be finished.   The big red barn represents my grandfather, Bud's, barn.  He was a dairy farmer and I put his name on the front of the barn in Holstein lettering.  The falling apart barn on the middle left represents the barn that fell on my husband's leg when we were first married.  It broke his leg in two places and required surgery and pins.  He still has problems with it.

I joined a barn swap years ago for a class at Annual Meeting and still have not put the blocks together.  I just LOVE them!

I enjoyed making them so much that I made them all again and put them in a quilt as desined by the original designer and gave it to my Sister-in-law as a wedding gift.  I hand quilted this one.
