Deana: Tuesday Archives - A little late

I was thrilled to see that the Tuesday Archives linky over at Val's Quilting Studio is still open for a few hours.  This week is it about Ghastlies and Ghosts.  I was excited to link up because I made a Halloween quilt for every person in the house a few years ago.

This one is mine.  I added some close ups of a couple of my favorite blocks.

This quilt began as a friend group swap.  I asked everyone to make me a Halloween block of any size and kind.  The blocks that came back to me from that swap were the Jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins, dracula, "Pumpkin Patch" words, spiders, candy corn, little witch on the top left, trick-or-treaters, and the haunted house.  I loved them but needed more for a good sized quilt, so I joined an on-line Halloween block swap where I received the striped witch legs, two ghost blocks, the bats, and the skeleton.  Those blocks were supposed to finish at 12" square which made quilt assembly easier.  In that swap I made the witches on the brooms with the dangly legs.  It is a Buggy Barn pattern that I just LOVE!  The long and tall witch in the center as well as the cats were partially fused quilt blocks a friend was getting rid of.  I finished and dolled them up a bit.

The Candy Corn Border is my design.  I used the Super60 30 degree ruler to cut strips that were sewn together.  I think it really adds to the quilt.

Can I just say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE this quilt!

I made the Jack-o-Lanterns for my son.  This is also a Buggy Barn Pattern.

I made several Buggy Barn witches and cats and then put them into two quilts, one for each daughter.  One daughter took her to college to put on her bed next month so I could not get a current photo but here is a blurry one.

I put witches brooms for the border on the last one.

I found an after Halloween sale on all of this Halloween fabric.  I think the sale really is what got me going on all of these quilts in the first place.  This is a panel I bought for the back.

I am linking up with Val's Quilting Studio - Tuesday Archives.  She has two linkies today, one is called "Ghastlies" and the other is "Ghosts".  Below are my ghost blocks that are in the first quilt.  These two blocks were received from quilters in an on-line Halloween block swap.  I was not actually in the swap, but I emailed a few participants and asked if they would make one for me if I made them a Buggy Barn witch in exchange.  I am SO GLAD they accepted.

One more thing...

I am letting blogland know that my Windmill Quilt Pattern is finally finished.  If you are interested, you can find it in my Craftsy shop here or my Etsy shop here.

Thanks you for all your wonderful comments and support regarding this quilt!

Halloween swap finally quilted and bound

I am adding this to the Blogger's Quilt Festival at amyscreativeside. This is my third time to play along with this festival.  You can see my fall 2009 entry here and my 2008 entry here.

I hope you like the quilt and its story.

In 2005 I was involved with a friends and family round robin.  Each of us chose a theme or quilt pattern we wanted which were passed around each month for a person to make a block.  I chose a Halloween theme.  I never assembled them because I just didn't have enough blocks to do anything.

A year ago I located a Halloween "Spooktacular" round robin online at Jane's fabrics.  I was too late to join, but some of the ladies agreed to swap a block with me on the side.  I guess you could say that this lovely quilt is a culmination of friends old and new.  THANK YOU ALL!

I completed the quilting and binding on this baby 10-15-10.

It sort of all began with a little mystery class at Utah's Annual Quilt Meeting in Provo.  Our good friend, Charlene Richens, prepared a mystery for us in our hotel room.  This darling witch was the result of that mystery.  I have fond memories of much laughter and fun.

Cutie Pinwheel: Another Year of Clothesline Club!

Oh my George, those witch legs are so darn cute. Between these legs and the other witch pattern I found last time I surfed, I may not be finished making Halloween quilts.

Halloween Buggy Barns Completed -- yeah!

I did get my kids Halloween quilts completed before (ON) Halloween. I really love the way they turned out. This one is Justin's. I didn't quilt much in it -- didn't think it needed it.

This one is Jessi's. The witch in the center was fused by Deb several years ago. We took a mystery class from Charlene Richens, a good quilting friend, SEVERAL years ago at Annual Meeting in SLC. I LOVE the witch, but Deb wasn't too excited about her. I think she is perfect in the middle of the quilt.

When Jim came upstairs in the morning I told him, "I left this quilt out for one night and some spider made webs all over it." I had him going for a minute.

This last Halloween project is the one I'm really excited about. It's not quite done -- just needs borders. It is mine to keep. It was a round robin I did in 2005. From the top:
Mary Israel - Pumpkin Patch (words)
Linda Johnson - Dracula
1st Pumpkin (left to right) - Mariella Potter
2nd Pumpkin - Me (leftover from Justin's quilt)
3rd Pumpkin - Karen Trumen
4th Pumpkin - Theresa Terry
Little witch broom - Fae Torgerson
(moving straight down) spiders - Deb Butler
cats - me
bats - Cathy in Lakebay, Washington
(moving straight down) Witch legs - Nedra from St. George, Utah
Skull - Jennifer from Arlington, Texas
Buggy Barn witch - me (leftovers from girls quilts)
Another (purple witch ) - me
(moving straight down) My witch from Charlene's mystery class

3 Candy corns - Felicity Evans
Orange witch - Lyn Evans
Purple witch on broom - Kris from Rochester, NY
Haunted House - Marie Pugsley
Trick-Or-Treaters - Felicity Evans
"Boo" - Belinda from Petersburg, Texas

some finishes of late

I finally have some finishes to show. This quilt top was one of the first I ever made. In fact, it was done so many years ago that I even sashed it in really cheap fabric.

When I got it out this summer to quilt, the fabric bothered me so bad that I picked the whole thing out and ...

...resashed it with an excellent quality batik blue. The binding is attached by machine but still needs to be hand-done on the other side.

Jessi's has been done for several years and is hand quilted. I made both the girls quilts out of scraps that were given to me and some leftovers from a couple of quilts I had made.

This is my last orphan quilt. I won it my first year at Annual Meeting and finally added a border and quilted it. It is kind of cute for a poor little orphan, don't you think? I bought the border fabric and backing at a yard sale. It was fabric that was meant to be used for little girl's dresses.

This is Felicity's little witch quilt she completed at our Fall Retreat. She paid me to quilt it and make/attach the binding. She will finish up the hand work. I love her colors!

Here is the first of FOUR Halloween quilts I'd like to get done this month. This one is Jolynn's. I even made a little pillowcase for her to store it in while she goes on bus trips. It is a buggy barn pattern. I mixed the witches and cats because I liked them both. I borrowed the broom border pattern from a pattern Becky bought at our Fall Retreat.

Here are some close-ups of the quilting.

Justin's is ready to quilt and mine and Jessi's still need to be assembled but the blocks are pretty much done.

Fall Retreat - Felicity & Kit

Here is the group that attended our little retreat Wed night - Sunday: Becky, Lyn, Deb W, Deana, Deb B, Jolynn, Jessi, and Felicity. Jodi took the photo.

JUST REMEMBER that this was NOT a beauty trip. We spent little time looking great and lots of time sewing.

Jodi is in this photo. We had a fabulous time and accomplished SO MUCH!
Felicity made witches...
This was the first one she completed.
She also completed a Santa wallhanging. The eyes and mustaches will be added after it is quilted.
Her Buggy Barn witches were done in WONDERFUL COLORS! We were all envious.

Kit joined us on Saturday in the other room doing his leather work. It was great to visit with him.

Fall Retreat - Jodi & Deana

Jodi also made Buggy Barn witches. Her family was busy and sick, so she only sewed with us one day. She did sew more at home, though. I hope she will post her progress for us to see because I don't have any photos.

The next two photos are of the Mariner's Compass quilt Felicity made last year. I set in her little circles on the side and quilted it for her last year. It's a beauty!

I got the borders on Justin's Buggy Barn Jack-o-lantern quilt.

I joined (with Deb B's help) the blocks and put broom borders on Jolynn's Buggy Barn cat and witch quilt.

I also started and completed this black, white, and red Buggy Barn "Going in Circles" top for Jolynn's future wedding.

Spooktacular Swap Addition

Cactus Needle Quilts Nedra blogged about our personal swap. Check it out!

My Completed Halloween Swap Blocks

brown dirt cottage Belinda blogged about our little Halloween private swap. When I saw her "Boos" they weren't done yet because she hadn't made them square. I told her I would prefer a rectangular shaped block -- too bad for me. The little ghost on top of the "Boo" is adorable!!
