My swap partner's blog in Maine

Sewing & Quilt Gallery: ALQS-3 Art Quilts

Goodies in the mail

More Dorinda progress -- mostly basting
I received this Halloween block in the mail from Jenn in Arlington, Texas. I love it! I am getting so excited to put my Halloween Quilts together. I have a few more blocks to complete and then I can mail some more out and start assembling my kids quilts.

Remember my art quilt swap? Well this is what I got in return. It came to me all the way from Margaret in Maine. She lives near the ocean and likes to depict it in her work. She calls it "Orca". I love it! This quilt was my 2nd choice -- we could choose up to 15. I teatered back and forth between this one and another while classifying them in order of preference. I'm very happy and will likely do it again.
As for the swap, I would LOVE for her to do one the same way only not ART quilts. While I absolutely LOVED trying my hand at art, I do feel that there were several ARTISTS who submitted works although they were not really QUILTERS. Having been a quilter for over thirteen years, I'm a little partial to high quilting standards. I selected the quilts with the best workmanship and ones that were washable. Maybe I'm just a little more on the traditional side than I thought.
As far as my quilt is concerned, it really didn't turn out as artsy as I'd hoped. I still need more practice. I certainly am not straight traditional because I like odd twists, but I guess I'm not an artist yet either.

Italy through window blinds

This is my ALQS3 quilt swap and my first attempt at an art quilt. My little quilt is done and I'm thrilled enough with it that I'll have to make myself one.

Title: Italy through window blinds

This little quilt is 16" x 16" and made almost entirely out of batiks and my own hand dyed and hand painted fabrics. It is my interpretation of a photograph I found and Ricky Tims "Convergence" ideas. I sampled drawings with both vertical and horizontal strips but fell in love with the horizontal ones because it adds so much height to the tall building. It gives me the feeling of being in a basement looking out a window through blinds. This quilt is almost entirely paper-pieced with strips sewn between the horizontal strips. I quilted stone shapes in the left building and a sun in the upper left corner -- its rays fill the sky across the quilt. A quilt sleeve is sewn onto the back for hanging.

Here are some close ups.

Art Quilt Swap

I decided a month ago to join my first on-line quilt swap. Details about it can be found on the link in the sidebar called "Another little art quilt swap". Anyway, I like the way she is handling the swap; this is why I chose this one not because it was an art quilt swap. If you show an interest in joining you email her. If you have your little quilt done by July 20th you send her an electronic finished photo. If it is not done you don't. She will post all of the "finished" quilts on her blog. From them (if you finished yours) you select 10 that you like in order of preference. She will use those selections to decide who gets which one and then you are given an address to mail it to.

I don't really know if I'll really get it done or not but I wanted to post my ideas. At least if I don't complete it I can still have my ideas some place I can find them again.

Because art quilts are new to me, I've been studying several art quilts and other works of art online. I'm leaning towards doing some type of convergence quilt as taught by Ricky Tims.

This photo below intrigued me and is the basis for my idea. I traced a general outline and then photo copied that outline.

Next, I cut my outline into vertical strips and placed spacing between the strips to yield the sample below.

Next, I tried the same thing with horizontal strips. This one is really talking to me because it shows more depth making you feel more like you are looking up.
