New BOM quilts I have started

May years ago I was friends with a couple who had a little boy that stole my heart. He is 55 years old now, and is contemplating his 4th marriage. This lady seems more suited to him, so I want to make a quilt for them. His mother was part Cherokee Indian and he identifies with that part of his genealogy. I am making one of the quilts for him. It is callled TAOS and is in turquoise and browns. I have the first two blocks done.

The other quilt is a Christmas theme. This is the first block.

The colors aren't true on either picture. I will have to remember to take them in better light.

Not Quilting

I have not had a chance to quilt since my 40 Shades of Grey

I have been making masks for Project Protect.  The goal of the project is to make  million medical grade face masks for hospitals and nursing homes. The kits are pre-cut, so it just sewing them together, There are components for 100 masks in each kit. The first week I made 70 masks. So far this week I have 60 completed. They take a lot longer than I though they would.

I finished the top last week, but life got crazy and I didn't get it posted. The quilt is set in a diagonal and with the different size blocks, was like a jigsaw puzzle. Thank goodness a grid was sent to put it together. It took 3 days to assemble.

I put it on my bed for the picture and then I realized that the head was at the foot, so it is upside down, but n you get the idea

The yellow one I am doing a quilt as you go, so it will be awhile before I get it assembed.

January blocks are complete. These are called Catherine Wheels.

This is what I found about the origin of the block.

Saint Catherine was tortured on a wheel by the Emperor Maxentius for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. The wheel broke and Catherine was eventually beheaded instead. Her martyrdom is remembered in the firework called the 'Catherine Wheel'.

I made the alternate blocks first, and was ill with bronchitis. I ended up picking out about 1/2 of the first block, so put it away until I felt better.

These cute blocks are called Beach Huts. Quick and easy to assemble

The instructions in the booklet did not quite match walls to roofs. One of the ladies in the group redid the instructions, with just a simple change of how to cut the walls and add the door. The walls and roofs fit perfectly. Remake is above and original is below.

I have decided to make my alternate quilt blocks first, so I can work out the kinks before doing the one from the kit.

Our next blocks are called "Catherine Wheels" and I am wondering if anyone knows the origin. we have googled and find no information. They are paper pieced and sort of a 3-D look.

I am loving this quilt and it's challenges. I decided to make a second quilt using scraps and stash.

I am doing a new BOM called 40 Shades of Grey

It comes in a kit every month, So far I have 2 months.

Not sure I will do it this way again. I would rather just have all the material and cut it myself.

These four blocks are called Criss-Cross Blocks

They are 11" blocks. Working with diagonal blocks to the square center takes a bit of coordination, making sure each set is turned the correct direction. Two of the white fabrics have writing on them, so trying to decide if they should be directional or random was a challenge. 

This block is called Pineapple. It is 17" and was a different challenge. I like the way it turned out. 

And this block is called Lightening. It is 19" square and will be the center block  of the quilt.

I misread the cutting instructions and cut one of the sets of squares at 3 1/8 instead of 3 7/8, so I had to do some fussy matching. I think it turned out okay though. This is one reason I would like to have the whole piece of fabric instead of small pieces. I could not just cut new block.

Next month will be Log Cabin variations, so I will have to pay close attention to my cutting instructions.

Ann: Graduation and Ruffled Roses

 The Ruffled Roses top from 2011 is now quilted, bound and delivered.

My friend Margaret did the quilting on her long arm. She was going out of town with her daughters and granddaughters, so did it quickly. Unfortunately when she got home her basement was flooded, so we were both so happy that she had taken the time to do it before she left, because her long arm machine is in her basement.

 This is the center section of the quilt. Lots of piecing and applique went into it.

And here is our graduate, Kylie. She is number six of thirteen grandchildren.

Back in 2011, while I was working on the quilt, I spent a long weekend with the kids while their parents went to Las Vegas to run in a Ragnor Relay. I worked on the quilt while I was there and she sat right by me and watched me sew.

Kylie graduated from Northridge High School yesterday, with High Honors. She will attend Weber State University in the fall, but next week she will be taking a CNA class and then will probably work in an assisted living center this summer.

She is our Ice Skating Queen and will got to the national competition in Wenachee Washington in the fall. Last year she took second place over-all in Chicago.

Ann: I am still here

I have been sadly absent for way too long. I had problems with my computer, not allowing me to attach pictures to the blog. When I finally got a new computer, I was too busy to post. I have been serving a service mission for my church, working at the FamilySearch center here in Lehi. That has been a wonderful experience, learning more for myself, but also being able to help others with their family history. I finished my mission this week and am trying to catch up on what I have not posted.

I finished the Civil War Memorial quilt, that I completed piecing in 2011. I gave it to Cody, Vonda's youngest son, for his graduation gift last year. He was really pleased with it.

In January of this year, we got another great grandson. His name is Colton Lee Turner.

I made this quilt from all flannel. It was more of a challenge than I thought it would be, but it turned out pretty cute, and it gets used a lot.

The picture is his one month of age.

 I have another graduation coming up this month and am getting the binding on. I will post when I get it completed!

Ann: Harvest Sampler Quilt

I have been working on this harvest sampler quilt for the past few weeks. It has been really fun, and is now complete. The quilt was from a kit that was given to me. I machine quilted it and am pleased with how it turned out. I am not yet really proficient, but what I did worked. I learned a few more new things while quilting it.

Ann: Family Mystery Quilt Beginnings

Deana invited extended family to be part of the family mystery quilt this year. My beginning 5 blocks are identical and are called "Double Pinwheel". The colors are brighter than what this picture depicts. 

I am using black and white to go with future blocks we will be making. This was a fun block to make.

Star Crazy complete

I have finally completed the Star Crazy quilt that I pieced in 2010. It has been in the stack for grandchildren's graduation gifts. My 3rd granddaugher (of 6) and 4th grandchild (of 13) will be graduating from High School next week. 

I did a combination of "stitch in the ditch" and "free motion" 

The free motion quilting is in the corners and edges of the star center and along the green strips on the top and bottom. I challenge for me, as this is the first queen size I have used the free motion on.

Ann: Americana QAL Complete

I got the final borders on my Americana quilt top this morning. I really love how it turned out. It is larger than I had hoped, but it will just be a large throw. The colors did not come out as clear as i would have liked in the picture, but my camera and i-pad both have dead batteries and I didn't want to wait for them to charge, so I used my phone camera. The other border is red and white stripes.

My goal for this spring is to get my Crazy Star quilted. We have another granddaughter graduating from High School, and I need to have it complete and ready by the end of May.

Ann: Final row

I have completed the final row to the Americana quilt. I did not follow the pattern for it, though. Many years ago I started collecting fabric for an Americana quilt, but never found a pattern that I liked. Dorine and I exchanged some blocks and she shared this flag with me, so here was the perfect spot to put the flag.

The rows are all put together, just waiting for the sides. I am excited to have it almost complete.

Ann: November Rows for Americana QAL

I have been able to spend some time at the sewing machine the past week, and have completed the rows for the Americana Quilt. The Big Star block looked daunting, but was actually pretty easy and fun. Paper piecing and 3-D work was the major part of the block. I then added the 2 short rows to the side to make the row complete.

The Yankee Doodle Star row was fun to do also.

Almost done. December we will not be working on the quilt, as it is such a busy tine for everyone.

Ann: Freedom Row complete

This has been a fun row to do. Lots of small pieces and modifying. I used flags from a fat quarter that worked well with the pattern, so had to applique and work the change of fabric size. I am making a smaller quilt, so my spaces and ends are shorter to accommodate that, also. The row was very fun to do, though.
