Deana: Tuesday Archives with Val's Quilting Studio - Grandmother's Flower Garden

Tuesdays are a favorite linky day for me because Valerie at Val's Tuesday Archives  gives me a chance to reflect on past projects and dig them out of the closet.  Today's topic is "Granny Squares" and "Grandmother's Flower Garden".

I have never made a Granny Square block but I have a good start on two Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts.  Neither one is finished, and they are not on the list to work on in the near future either.

These are my two projects that are way on the back burner.

This one was a round robin where my friends each made me two flowers.  I think it will become a table topper.  Some pieces are just laying on the blue fabric, so if they are spaced funny, that is why.  This quilt is all out of Batiks --I love them!

Please excuse the wrinkles,  I just pulled it out of a box for this post.  This one is my own design; I call it "Grandmother's Overgrown Flower Garden", but I need to remove the border and start over because it is a mess.  I should have hand appliqued it,  but I got in a hurry and made a mess of machine applique.  Some day it will be all finished correctly.  I hope to market this pattern some day, so please do not copy it.  Thank you.

One thing I learned from this project is...
NEVER PUT A PROJECT AWAY THAT NEEDS TO BE PICKED OUT!  It is so hard to get going on it again.

Deana: Hexi post

Val's Quilting Studio is hosting an English Paper Piecing linky party.  These are my two projects that are way on the back burner.

Visit our newest Mystery BOM row swap.  It will be fun and is for international participants.
If you are not big on SWAPPS, check it out anyway because you can choose how much you swap and just Quilt Along the rest.

Deana: A finish and Dear Jane Progress

Yippy I got another finish!  Below is a quilt for my daughter, Jessi.  I designed it several years ago and have made several since.  I call it "Hexagons in Rotation".  I did not put a lot of quilting in it but I am happy with the results none the less.  It still needs the hand work on the binding.

I have also made progress on Dear Jane.  Several of these blocks were made in May but I forgot to post them.  Here goes:

Top Row:
H7 Bennington Star has 25 pieces and was regular pieced.
H8 Eaton's Crossroads has 19 pieces and is paper pieced and appliqued.
H9 Snowflake Melt has 33 pieces and is entirely paper pieced.
H10 Ben's Bowtie has 26 pieces and is regular pieced.

Middle Row:
H11 Piercing Rays has 24 pieces and is paper pieced.
H12 Hannah Lou's Hearts has 5 pieces - applique
H13 Farm Fields has 7 pieces - paper pieced
I1 Ralph & Nelda's Wedding has 20 pieces - regular pieced

Bottom Row:
I2 Kaye's Courtyard has 13 pieces - regular pieced
I4 Stability has 25 pieces - regular pieced and applique
I5 Maria's Majesty has 6 pieces - applique
I11 Coyote Chase has 6 pieces - applique

TOTAL DEAR JANE PIECES TO DATE IS 2,316.

I took a couple of different angle pictures of all my completed Dear Jane blocks.  I am starting row 9 and there are 13 total.  I hope that if I make 2 blocks a week I can finish the main blocks this year.  The borders will have to be a 2015 project.

I piled my last three finished up on my dresser for a photo.  Man they look SO GOOD!   Those three quilts are years in the making.  The purple one went together within a year, but I purchased the fabric for it years before I even started it.  This is fun!
Today I am linking up with Fort Worth Fabric Studio's Friday Night Sew In.

Deana makes progress on Jessi's Medallion

Linking up with Freshly Pieced.

I have been working hard to check the pattern for month 3 of Jessi's Medallion.  Below is a photo of the progress so far.  I just love what those four arrow points do to the total look of the quilt!

I also got a quilt top basted and about half quilted this week.  Below is a picture of it folded up and then the pieced back is below that picture.  This is a Buggy Barn star pattern.

I also got Jessi's Hexagon quilt on the frames so I can baste it.

A great hexie to model

http://seaside-stitches.blogspot.com/2011/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-nonnas-garden.html

I hope my Hexie table toppe will get finished someday.  When it does, I hope to put partial flowers in the corners like this one.

Deana: Hexie progress

I joined Susan's Hexagon quilt challenge.  Basically, I'm trying to work on it a little each month.  Below is what it looked like the first of February.
Since then I've added another flower and filled in a little background.  The extra flower, however, was already done.

A UFO finish and other progress...Deana

I am happy to say that I finished my February UFO.  Horray!! I am 2 for 2 -- 2 months 2 finishes.  This quilt will now move to the "needs quilted" list.

I also completed another Dear Jane block.  It needs a little fine tuning on one point, though.  D-12 Crossed Swords has 27 pieces and took 1 hour.

Next up is Brown Bag.  I had a strange number of blocks to work with and ended up with this shape.  Originally I thought I would take the four remaining blocks and place them in the four corners.  There is a problem though, I DON'T LIKE IT.

Next I played with halfing them instead -- better -- but I still don't think its right.

I think the last pictures (below) is closer to what I'm looking for.  I will need to half the blocks and remove the navy border, but I think it will work.  I will also have to duplicate two of them because I don't have enough.

Deana: Dear Jane & Hexagon Progress

D-11 Snow Crystal:  33 pieces and 45 minutes.  I reconstructed this block for paper piecing.  It was a cinch.  I hoped to complete two Dear Jane blocks this week and YIPPEE, I did.  I will add numbers and the name to this post later.

Dear Jane Quilt Grand Total so far:  1134 pieces and 42 hrs 57 min.
I also hoped to get my hexagon quilt this far and I did.  Goals and goal accomplishments are so wonderful!  This hexagon quilt was made from a pannel fabric. It will have enough blocks for two quilts. I am trying to decide if I want to reverse the red and cream fabrics which would give the second quilt a red background.  For some strange reason, this quilt looks more stunning in the photo than in person.

Funny, you can faintly see my snowman hexagon quilt on the wall behind it.  It is an addicting pattern.

Mom's Hexagon's in Rotation quilted

I am so excited to have finished my "One thing, one week challenge".  It was to quilt Mom's queen-sized "Hexagon's in Rotation" quilt.  It seems that I've quilted a gazillion of them, but it was really fun.  The really crazy thing is that I have two of mine that still need quilted.  You can see them here and here.

I hope she likes it.

I hope to post better photos later.  It is challenging to get a good photo when there is only one person home to hold the quilt up.  Laying them on the floor just doesn't do them justice.

This quilt project was born at our Dorinda retreat in June.   It is a stack-n-wack quilt designed by yours truly using the Super 60 ruler by Sara Nephew.  It is so fun and so fast to make.

Below are some links to others I've quilted in the past:

Pink Hexagon quilt top FINISHED!

I finally have a new top finished.  I cannot believe it took me from June to the first day of October to just put borders on this beautiful project.  The colors are SO MUCH RICHER and more beautiful in person - bad lighting I suppose.  The blue and pink pieces are rich batiks.  I believe they add so much to this piece.

I designed this quilt in the early 2000s.  This is the third completed top for me and I've got another one close and an fifth all cut out.  This project is just FUN and EASY to make.

And here is Deana's workstation
My completed top. Sorry I cut off the top border, but it is the same as the other 3
On Sunday evening, I went to South Weber to stay with grandkids, so their Mom could go to a convention with their dad, and have a few days off.
Since the oldest is 12, she took most of the responsibility of the younger ones, and I was able to complete the borders on my hexagon quilt and put together my June blocks for Star Crazy.

Dorinda Retreat #2

We had a wonderful, relaxing time at the Dorinda Retreat this year.  Everyone in attendance finished an entire quilt top except for Kristen who completed a couple of purses.
Back row:  Lyn, Becky, Felicity, Ann
Front row:  Deana, Kristin, Marie

Mom, Ann, Marie, and Deana pose with their finished Dorinda quilts.  (Deana and Marie's are not quilted yet).  They are all so the same and yet so different.

Ann finished her Hexagon quilt top.

Becky finished a cute little cowboy quilt top on the first day from fat quarters and started on a darling pastel quilt from a kit.  She would have likely finished it as well if she hadn't needed to go home early for a family emergency.

Felicity completed a quilt top on the first day from a layered cake.  She spent the rest of her time making half square triangles for her Star Crazy project and got this much completed:

Lyn finished her Hexagon quilt top complete with borders.
Below is a picture of it in progress...

Marie also finished her Hexagon quilt top.

Kristen completed two purses and started the applique prep on her Scarecrow quilt (the same one I'm dying to make someday).

I, Deana, also went home with a Hexagon quilt top finished.  I also worked on another one that is very close.
