2012 UFO Challenge

Jan 4, 2012

I did not do so well with the Judy's UFO challenge for 2011, so I am hopeful that I will do better for 2012.   I completed 4, almost 5, out of the twelve on my list, but I also completed several other projects that were not on the list.  Judy has you list 12 projects that need completion (by your own definition of complete) and number them 1-12.   Each month she will tell us which project to complete by #.

In addition to the 12 UFOs listed below, I have some tops to quilt,  I am making one Dear Jane block a week, one Omigosh block a week, and am finishing up a mystery challenge.  I also have a pretty crazy and busy life: almost full-time job, 3 teens who are very active in various school sports that I attend,  and two heavy church callings (Relief Society Counselor and Stake Girl's Camp Director).  Quilting keeps me sane, but I don't feel bad when the more important "life" things slow my quilt goal progress.

Wish me luck!

#1 Make 24 Omigosh blocks

Last year I gave most of my Omigosh blocks away to Linda, a dear friend, but I do want to continue progress on one for me.  I hope that by setting this goal for one month that I can get a good chunk of the blocks done on my quilt.  There is no way I'll have all the blocks completed in one month on this project, so it is an ongoing project I'll be doing all year but will hit it heavy this month.

Below is the quilt I made for her.  This one is a wallhanging, but I want mine to be at least a large throw size.

#2  My first original Hexagons in Rotation - goal is to quilt, bind, and give it to Aunt Dana.

I designed this quilt many years ago and have since made several and quilted several for others like it.  This poor quilt has been basted and partially quilted for years.  I quilted it so tight that it will take me quite some time to complete.

#3  Mystery Quilt - goal is to complete the top, quilt, and bind.
I took this mystery class many years ago.  I still don't even know what I'm making, but I still have the clues.

#4 Grandma's Overgrown Flower Garden - goal is to fix the problems to complete the top.
I designed and taught this quilt at Annual Meeting many years ago. I love the design but had serious problems with the border applique because I tried to hurry it on the machine rather than carefully taking my time to hand applique it. Now it is time to make it right. The problems will require a lot of handwork, so I doubt I will get it quilted in a month's time.

#5  This month has three goals:
1) Dorinda Mystery catch up
My Dorinda descendants and I started a mystery quilt for 2011.  Each participant wrote down rules to follow in Jan and then I drew them out of a hat each month.  I am 4 rules behind and want to get them caught up before the last rule comes due in February.  It will be a queen-sized quilt when I am finished.

2) Spring Picket Fence Wallhanging - quilted and bound

I designed this wallhanging from the patterns in my Spring Row by Row quilt.  It is so close to being quilted that its crazy its not done.  It will take me very little time.

3)  Tammy's barn fix.  I added Tammy's barn fix to this project because it will literally only take me a few minutes to fix.  I gave her the barn quilt for her first marriage's wedding quilt.  I put the couple's name over the door of the center barn.  She has since remarried and wants me to "remove" the first husband's name.  Sadly, I've had her quilt for a couple of years (she has 2 kids now).

#6  Frogs Round Robin - goal is to complete a top and quilt/bind it.

This was another state round robin that simply needs assembly.

#7  Sliced Quilt Challenge - goal is to complete my slice and assemble the slices together.

This was a prize design project, tons of fun, and one I'm very excited about and proud of.  I so want it done!!
This link explains the project.
#8  Friends and Flowers Round Robin - goal is to quilt and bind

This is another round robin only it was done with friends and family.  I LOVE this quilt!

#9  Buggy Barn Stars - goal is to complete a top

My daughter started this quilt at one of our family retreats.  She doesn't really like to sew and is very busy, so I hope to get the top done so she can put it away for her future wedding.

#10 Dorinda

I am nearly 3/4 complete with the hand quilting on this project.  I want this one done in February no matter what, so I plan to take the drawing number for February and trade it for whatever month #10 comes up.

#11 Theresa's Christmas
My quilt friends and I draw names for Christmas and make each other a wallhanging.  We have done this for 9 years and WE LOVE IT.  Below are a couple of pictures of possible patterns I may choose to make for her quilt.  I am counting it as a UFO because I am starting it now and making sure it gets finished in the month #11 is drawn in.

#12 Snowman Embroidery
I only have 2 1/2 more blocks to finish in order to complete this lovely quilt.  My goal is to complete the blocks, not the quilt assembly or quilting as I don't think I can accomplish that much work all in one month.

I may add a picture of all the finished ones when I get a minute, but here is the latet one I have finished.
