Next project minus the borders

This has been a fun and fast project. I have wanted to make a Jacob's Ladder for several years, but just never got around to it. A few months ago I saw a tutorial on-line and decided it was time to think about it. I made the blocks from fat quarters that came in packets that I never used on another project, or from left-over other projects. A fat quarter will make 2 blocks, so I set one in the left-over yellow from my Dorinda quilt and matched the mottled look in gold. Next I set the blocks opposite each other and made a four block larger block. It is roughly 60 X 80 inches at this point. I haven't decided what to do for the borders, but am leaning to using the gold, as I still have some fabric left over. The yellow is gone, so I can't use any of that.

Here are the last 5 blocks and the finished top

This is block #49. It is called Yankee Puzzle, a subject of concern was Lincoln's philosophy of Liberty and Union. Was it possible?

Block # 50 is "Grapes of Wrath" (sorry it is so blurred) This block represents the song, "Battle Hymn of the Republic". The story behind the poem, and later the music is it set to...Julia Ward Howe was on a trip to Washington DC and the song "John Brown's Body" was a favorite marching song for the troops. She was disturbed by the words, thinking the music needed something more patriotic. When she returned home, she wrote the poem which was set to the music of the marching song.

Block 51 is called "New York" remembering the ladies of New York who held bazaars and other fundraisers to aid the soldiers.

Block # 52 is called "Christmas Star" in remembrance of the first Christmas of the Civil War.

And the final block #53 (there were 53 Saturdays in 2011) is called "Union Shield" a symbol used in many quilts and samplers during the 1860's and '70's.

The blocks are 8.5 inches square, and I wanted to make a King sized quilt, so I made several blocks with different fabric, and came up with 80 blocks. I set them 8 across and 10 rows down. I probably should have mitered the corners, but with the pattern in the border print, I was afraid I would not be able to match them exactly, so they are not mitered. The quilt is being held side-ways view, with the top corner on the upper right corner. The corner blocks are all the same pattern, but with different fabric, so they do not look much alike.

This was a fun project. I am glad it is done to this point. I have to find fabric to put on the back. I will probably give this one to one of Vonda's children, as Robert served in South Carolina while he was in the Navy. He came home with a Rebel flag, and loved the history he learned while there.

I am SO EXCITED to have finally made some quilting progress. Below are photo updates of what I accomplished this week.
I spent most of the week creating this next block for my "Quilted Barns". This block goes in the Daughters of Dorinda Mystery project. I am pleased with how it is coming along. All of the tiny bridge pieces were turned under and glued together until I could stitch them down. I still have about 1/3 left to hand stitch. I will also add some thread painted thinner bars to add more detail to the bridge.

I further intend to applique a horse and buggy on the road.

I put a plastic spoon in the picture to give you an idea how tiny those bridge pieces are.

Below are three blocks that are partially done for the Block Lotto this month. I need to get to a copy center to get an accurate template for template A. My printer chops off the bottom edge of it, so I will have to get the template another way. I would LOVE to win this quilt. It is so me! I have three more blocks cut out and want to do a total of 9.

Next are three blocks for my Omigosh quilt. I loved the one I made for Linda so much that I just must have one for myself. These blocks will finish at 4 1/2" each. (spoon dimension again).

Next, I completed one more Dear Jane block. I think it is SO DARN CUTE!

F-5 is called Parcheesi. It took me 1 hour and 42 min. today and has 25 pieces.

I paper pieced and hand appliqued it.

I have spent a total of 60 hours and 50 min on my Dear Jane Quilt

So far it has 1,513 pieces.

by clicking on the link here or on my sidebar. Thearica is challenging us to finish up those old blocks we acquired from swaps. I have a few of those piles. There are prizes and everything.

I chose to work on "Winged Things". Here are the quilt labels to show who made blocks in 2003 and 2004.

This project began as a state needle-turn applique round robin. I pieced all the backgrounds and asked the ladies (there were only 3)to applique a "winged thing" on them ("No aircraft," I requested). Each of those three ladies made two blocks. The blocks were OUTSTANDING! I just didn't have enough of them so I joined another round robin the following year and asked for more "winged things" but this time it was not a needle-turn group.

This is what the blocks looked like in January 2011.

With the help of Judy's UFO challenge by the end of January I was able to get them assembled into a top with borders, but I have not even started any quilting on it yet.

Many of the ladies I never met because we swapped through the mail. There was one, however, who is a very dear friend. Loretta moved further South and I rarely ever see or keep in touch with her. I have fond memories of our weekly sew sessions at her home. She made the angel block on the top right AND the bird bath block near the bottom center. She is truly an angel in real life -- I love her!!

The beehive block is significant because it stands for Utah - the beehive state. We are called the busy bees for our hard working communities. The lady who made the beehive block also made the birdhouse block. Her workmanship is astounding as well.

Update on Dorinda Mystery...

The result of the cracker jack block...

I posted a picture of a cracker jack block I made in December here.

Now I can reveal its purpose. The Block Lotto participants made a quilt for the Lotto's creator, Sophie. She was having an extremely difficult season of life, so some fabulous ladies put together a group to make her this quilt. You can see my block in the second row. We each selected a past Block Lotto block for our pattern. We were to follow the color rules of the original Block Lotto block.

If you are interested in the Block Lotto, the January block complete with instructions can be found here. I just LOVE this month's block. I hope I get it done soon.

I did not get as much done this year as last, but at least I made progress. I was going strong and hard on my goals until the month before Girl's Camp and then I guess I got too busy.

I am counting 13 finishes this year for me. Here is the breakdown:

Ruffled Roses top FINISHED!

Wow, it is the last week of December, but I finally got the Ruffled Roses top completed.

The last set of swag borders. Finally have the hang of it, so this did not take too long to do.

Then they had to be set in a long border for each of the four sides. By the time I got them all together and pressed, I was ready for a break.

But I still had the corners to do. These are all appliqued, but I did them by machine, with a blanket stitch. If I had done them by hand, I would still be working on the center corners.

And FINALLY, ALL the borders and corners are set in place, pressed, and ready to be quilted. The pattern has the option of the little purple berries to be added to the wider green sashing. They are to sit at the peak of each swag. I pinned one on to see how I liked it, but I preferred to leave it bare. I like it better this way.

My helpers are not tall enough to hold it high enough to get the whole thing straight, but you get the idea of what it looks like. I have enjoyed this project, as it has been a challenge for me. I am glad I did it, but don't know if I want to try another one just yet. Susan Gorman likes little tiny pieces and really small HSTs. For now, I am happy with what I have done.

9th Annual Christmas Quilt Swap

I made the Omigosh quilt for Linda. She cried and then I cried. She has really wanted one but hasn't been able to get going on it.

Linda made this beautiful 30s dresdom quilt for Deb. Deb loves 30s. I love how it is a larger quilt.

Here is the back of it. Linda quilted it so beautifully.

Deb made Theresa a lone star mounted in an old window from. I love it!

Theresa made me this beautiful flower wall hanging out of batiks. I LOVE batiks!!

Faye made this for Mariella on her embroidery machine. She does beautiful work. It is lovely redwork.

Mariella made this darling little quilt for Faye. I am so impressed with it.

Here is the group for this year, except me because I was behind the camara. Left to right is Deb, Mariella, Faye, Theresa, and Linda. They are wonderful friends and amazing quilters.

This is the 9th year of Our Christmas Wallhanging swap gifts. The participants have changed here and there, but we are still going strong.

I finished an Omigosh wall quilt for Linda this week. I loved it so much that I can't wait to start my own soon. The smallest pieces finish at 1/2" square. This quilt is so nuts but so adorable. The edges are ruffled because I photographed it before I did the handwork on the binding. I was not able to get a good photo with the binding complete because I was in a hurry to give it to her.

Good Week for Quilting

This has been a good week to be able to sew. Marian has worked the early morning shift all week and has been home by early afternoon to take the boys. Jennie's little ones were only here 2 days and they take afternoon naps, so I have been able to get my housework done in the mornings and have the afternoons to do what I wanted (and I chose to work on my quilt tops).

Ruffled Roses

This is the next to last set of swag borders. Next month I will do one more set, the attach them to the rest of the top, then add the final borders. It is square, so I am thinking of adding extra width to the top and bottom so it can be used as a coverlet.

I got the basket borders and floater strips added to the top and it now measures 60 inches square.

Here is one of the corner pieces. All 4 corners are the same. Just the baskets are different. The corners are appliqued, like the center piece.

Civil War blocks

This is block # 47. It is called "Dixie Tea". Because of the embargo during the war, the southern states were unable to get coffee beans, so they experimented with different herbs for tea. The most favorite was Sassafras Tea, from the Sassafras plant. They used both the leaves and the root of the plant, and sweetened it with molasses made from sugar cane.

Here I have 3 rows set together. I am not doing them in order of being made, as I used a lot of the same material on some of the blocks, and wanted to spread it out more randomly. I will add another border around the entire top when it is all put together, then add the border pieces. This helps me remember which is the top corner blocks.

Civil War Blocks 42 - 46

Number 42 is called "H for Hospitals"

The field hospitals had a flag with a green H flying, to indicate the tent or building to be a field hospital.

Number 43 is called "Right Hand of Friendship"

The underground railroad helped get the slaves away from the plantations. The "Friends" helped find them jobs and security.

Block # 43, Union or Union Square. Honors the Union Army

(Oops, I see a couple of HST's turned the wrong way. Better fix those tomorrow)

#45 Port and Starboard, to honor the Union Navy.

Block # 46 This is called "Apple Tree"

The Union Army had a marching song, "We'll hang old Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree"

I have all of the dividing strips and borders cut. There are a total of 53 different blocks and I have made a few extra. The pattern makes a double bed size top, but I am going to do it to fit a queen size bed. I will soon be laying out the blocks to decide how I want to arrange them. And then I will start assembling. That will be a fun project!

Baskets 20-24. These are the last set of basket blocks.

Here are the basket borders. I have to add a thin floater to the existing top and then sew these on. I haven't even started the swag borders for this month, but hope to get to that soon.

I will post again when I get the swags done and the basket borders attached.

Ruffled Roses and Civil War Progress

The wet, stormy weather has given me a chance to get caught up on my sewing.

I finished the corner appliqued blocks and was ready for the new blocks for this month.

Four more baskets. This is a total of 20, and I think there will be one more set next month.

The next set of swag borders. This is a total of 21 blocks. It looks like November and December have more sets.

The Civil war blocks just keep coming. This one (#38) is called "Ohio Star" John Brown had an obsession with antislavery, and recruited two black, free soldiers from Ohio to fight to take over Harper's Ferry. They were easily defeated and the song "John Brown's Body" came from that scrimmage.

Block 39 is called "Hovering Hawks" and the hawk is a scavenger/predator bird. Soldiers who were compared to the hawk were called "Jayhawkers" They were the scavengers who could go into a town empty-handed and leave with a wagon filled with supplies, and drawn by a team of horses.

Block # 40 is called "Order Number Eleven". Order #11 was named for a Union order forcing Southern sympathizers to leave their homes. There are reports that the marauders would just invade the homes of those sympathizers and take everything they could carry away. This block is from the memory of a 10-year-old girl who saw the soldiers take away one of her mother's quilts with this design. The design is also known as the reel or the Hickory Leaf.

It is appliqued, which I did with the sewing machine.

Block 41 is the "Red, White, and Blue Quilt". Every Civil War sampler needs a pieced star block. This was difficult to piece together. It does not lie as flat as I would like, but it should be okay when the quilt is complete and quilted.

The next 2 Civil War Blocks
Block 36 is called Kentucky Crossroads. Kentucky was a neutral state during the war, but the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers meet in Western Kentucky and one of the early wars was fought there.
Block 37 is called "Confederate Rose"
The real flower is a Hibiscus which puts out different colors from a single plant.

The blocks for Ruffled Roses this month are the corner blocks around the baskets. This is all machine appliqued, and 2 of the stems are missing their buds until the corners are joined with the other adjacent blocks. This is the first of 4 blocks.

And the sixth set of swag borders. (3 swags)

This month's project is taking much longer than the past few, as the swags and baskets work up pretty fast.

Block 35 is called "Rosebud" It is in memory of the "famous" Confederate female spy Rose Greenhow.
Block 35 is called "Star of the West" (It is a little blurred again.)

The block is for John and Jessie Fremont, who were a power couple of the Civil War era. John C Fremont was the founder of California.

Block Lotto: in the nick of time

I just got a crazy whim and stitched up 3 blocks for the blocklotto this month. They were fast, easy, and fun.

I have been inactive for so long that I am no longer an author on the blog. I fully intended to make this one and the prevous month, but forgot about it until tonight.

I am diligently working on my Dorinda Mystery although I am a bit behind. I have hardly sewn a stitch all summer -- so not me. I hope I am getting into the swing of things again now that I am 3 months behind on my goals.

While I have been a semi-invalid, I have been able to prop up my knee and sew.
I am doing better, and going to Physical Therapy to regain my range of motion and strength in that knee. I am pain free, and walking with only a small limp now.
Here is the next Civil War block.This one is called "Empty Spools" remembering that the women put aside their sewing and handiwork to tear linen into bandages. This is block # 31, more than half way through. Very easy block to make. Took 5 minutes to sew it together, and the last few stitches I had to turn the wheel on the sewing machine by hand, as the power went out with less than an inch to finish the last seam.

This makes 16 baskets so far. They are getting easier to make. I did not have to pick out any HST's that were turned the wrong direction on this set. That saves a lot of time, doing it right the first time.

There are also 16 swags. This picture is a little dark and a little blurred. I am getting better, but sometimes the auto zoom moves at the same time as I click for the picture and it gets blurry. I also did not use the flash for this one.

Brown Bag Prizes Arrived

Here is what I received for winning the Brown Bag Contest "Most Creative Award": two pattern books and two cute jelly rolls. The card is even cute and fitting.

I placed my prizes on the quilt I made with the swap fabrics. It was truly a fun project!!!

Civil War blocks

Here are the latest Civil War blocks. Very fun to make.

The top one (block 29) is called "Railroad Crossing" The first battle of the Civil War was called "The Battle of Bull Run" (by the Union) or "The Battle of Mananas" (by the Confederates)
The Union lost and this railroad crossing was where the Orange and Mananas railroads crossed near the sight of the battle.
Block 30 is called "Peterson's Stars and Stripes" Peterson's Magazine had a colored drawing of the quilt, and is the first known colored block ever to be published. I appliqued the star in the middle of the stripes.

The top block is called "Barbara Frietchie Star" Legend is that she arose from her sick bed and held the Union Flag out the window of her bedroom when General Jackson marched his troops through her town.

The bottom block is call "Irish Chain" in memory of the Irish battalion who fought on the Union side of the war.

Christmas Table Runner

I was going nuts waiting for the next mystery rule, so I got out a book I bought 15 years ago and never had time to use. I planned to start a beautiful quilt to pass the time. I bought the fabric, but then I started thinking about needing to get Christmas ready for my kids before we leave for Washington, DC. Instead of starting the quilt, I decided to make this lovely table runner which was in the book. This is the second one I have finished. Two more to go. I'm loving it.
Don't know why the program turned the picture sideways. It makes it look distorted.

More baskets and swags

Here is the June baskets and swags for my rose quilt. Those 1 inch 1/2 square triangles are tedious, but sure look nice when put together. They are 6 1/2 inch blocks and I have 12 of them made so far.

The swags are fun, but also time consuming. They measure out at 7 X 11. I have 10 of them now.

Sorry, this one is blurry again. This is block # 22 and is called "Blockade"

Below is # 23 and is called "Illinois Roads" This is possibly the easiest quilt block I have ever made. It took 10 minutes to make. Cut 4 rectangles of both prints and sew them together to make 4 4" squares, then sew them together. It took almost that long to choose which prints to use to make this block.

My youngest daughter and her boys moved over the Memorial Day weekend, and I made here these cute hotpads from selvages. The back is the same as the binding.

They were so fun to make!

I finally completed my miniatures. I am so excited!! Thank you for the UFO challenge, Judy!!

Each block finishes at 9" square. The entire quilt is 41 1/2" square. The flying geese in the border too me FOREVER and is the only reason it took me years to complete. They were so boring and time consuming to make. They finish at 1" x 1/2". They were crazy. The sad thing is that I think they would have been more showy if they were a little bit bigger. Oh well.

Ann: Newest additions to the Civil War blocks

Blocks 20 & 21.

These really worked up fast. 15 minutes to sew them both together. It took longer to cut them out than to put them together.

Here are the 21 blocks to date. I was able to sew today, as the boys went for a ride with their Mom.

I have really used a lot of that blue. The fat quarter is almost gone. It is good that I can put them together in random order and not all next to each otheer.

Each week a new one comes out and they each have a name given to them by quilters over the years.

Deana's progress report: Dear Jane and other stuff...

I have been busy doing what I love this past week (finally).

Here are the Dear Jane blocks I've completed. I am only two behind my fellow Dear Jane friends -- yeehaw!!

E4: Buffalo Tree Hopper took 37 minutes and 15 pieces. It is all foundation pieced.

A5: Rising Son took 24 min. & 13 pieces. It is foundation pieced with the center circle hand appliqued. I REALLY like this one.

E6: Michelle's Medley took 1 hour and 40 pieces. It is all foundation pieced.

E7 Bread Basket took 1 hr and 12 m and 46 pieces. It is kind of cute and went together pretty well inspite of all the seams that required lining up. It is foundation pieced.

E8 Mama's Maze took 59 min and has 33 pieces in it. It is also foundation pieced.

E9 Quilt Jail took 42 min and 35 pieces. I get quite a kick out of the name. I think it turned out pretty cute as well.

E10 Five & Dime has 6 pieces and took 1 hour to complete. I did the applique part at Lorna's house while meeting with the Priceless Quilters who are also making the same blocks.

E11 Wagon Wheel is one of my most recent favorites. It has 14 pieces and took about 2 1/2 hours because I couldn't decide how to best do it. It is all applique with reverse applique as well. My Priceless friend, Faye, helped me to figure it out.

E12 MaryRuth's Corset took 50 min and 28 pieces. It is foundation pieced.

E13 completes another row and is called Moth in a Web. It took 41 min. and 26 pieces. It is foundation pieced and kind of cute although I wish I had made the four little spikes on the outside of the square out of a darker fabric so they would show up brighter.

I have temporarily skipped F1-F2 because I wanted to do the blocks that everyone else in the group is on. I only have those two skipped ones to do in order to catch up.

F3 Snowball took 17 min and has 17 pieces. Those are interesting numbers. This block was so simple and was only foundation pieced in the four corners where the half-square triangles are positioned. The rest is rotary cut and pieced.

F4 Old Windmill was also very simple and cute. It took me 24 min and has only 13 pieces. I foundation pieced it.

And here is the whole project so far. I LOVE how the colors on the diagonal are looking. I also took the time to join them all together. Now it is all in one piece except for the two blocks in row F.

I am very pleased to FINALLY show that my minis UFO has a completed border. Those little tiny pieces in the flying geese border were beyond nuts and VERY BORING. I now have the top basted and ready to quilt next week. My goal is to finish it this month. The binding is cut, sewn, pressed, and ready.

Finally, I have my UFO from April close to ready to quilt as well. I need to applique green leaves to the flower stems and it will be readky to baste.

I was pretty sad that I didn't finish it as planned in April, but maye I can catch up this month and still accomplish my "one finish a month goal". I purchased a backing for it which badly needs to be pressed and washed as you can see.

Lately I have so enjoyed listening to books on tape while I sew. It keeps my mind entertained while my fingers work.

Lyn's Progress & Updates

I hope she doesn't mind if I post her beautiful progress. Lyn finished the following quilts recently. She ended up giving the hand quilted log cabin quilt away as a wedding gift and will soon be giving the beautiful hand quilted purple dahlia as a wedding gift as well.

Her work is outstanding!

The log cabin quilt was made from fabrics given to her a few years ago by Deb B. It is so pretty.

The puple quilt pattern was purchased from the Amish on a trip back East. It is just so stunning and is so much prettier than the original one done in blues and creams.

Her hand quilting is my favorite part.

Ann: BOM and Civil War progress

It looks like this is my last day to work on quilt blocks for a while.

Jennie goes back to work tomorrow and I will have her babies and Marian's boys M-F for a while. No way I can sew with 3 toddlers and a newborn to keep up with.

Marian is planning to move out the end of the month and Stephanie won't be here until June 20, so the rest of this month is taken up with grandkids.

This set of blocks are baskets for the BOM from the Quilt Show. The next few months we will make baskets and swag borders. There are appliqued corner blocks, but closer to fall or winter.

These baskets are very time consuming. the HST's are 1 inch before being sewn together.

Oops, I just noticed that one basket has HSTs going the wrong direct. Will have to pick them out and turn them,

Here are the swag borders. The top bunch has 4 swags, the bottom 3. Again, very time consuming, but easier to put together. The strips are 1 1/4 inch wide before being sewn.

And these are my latest 2 Civil War blocks. They come out every Saturday, so I may be able to keep up with them. It takes longer to cut them out than to sew them together. This is a really fun project and I am glad I decided to do them. I need to post them on flickr for the group to see, but have not had the time.

And my mystery block is nearly done. I will probably add more to it as the second section is added. I have taken some teaser pictures, which I hope to get posted on the next few Mondays.

Here is the latest progress on my Daughter's of Dorinda Mystery quilt. I am very excited with how it is turning out. My favorite part is always the newest part.

Here are some close-ups of the thread painted branches. I'm not perfectly satisfied with them and may still work on them some.

This tree maybe needs a few more branches. I also added one more badly needed black line on the barn roof. It looks better now.

Guess I better clarify what grandchild this quilt is for as Ann wanted to know. She is being born to Gary's son, Brian and Brian's wife, Sara. They live in Provo, and this will be number five and most likely their last--also Gary's last (except that he counts my grandchildren as his too, and I count his as mine). She will be number 37 of our combined grandchildren.

Here is the baby quilt I just finished for our new granddaughter due in the next couple of weeks. I had to try the stack and whack method after seeing Marie's. I also borrowed the balloon idea from Moira in our mystery quilt group as I loved her balloons. This was such fun to do. I used the idea of a friend for binding it using bias strips of the different colors in the quilt. It has a few problems as I have been struggling with my eyes and can't see the close up very well, but I love it anyway!

Ruffled Roses Progress: Ann

Here is my progress on the Susan Garman quilt top. It is going to be a large quilt, but the next few months will be working on the last 2 rows. As you can see, it started with a square and has increased on all four sides each month. The section I just added is 3/4 inch squares, set in 4 square and turned point to point. LITTLE PIECES. You can also see that I took out the lopsided end to the center and re-did it. I only had to take out about 1/3 of the work and I re-appliqued it by machine, so it went back together without the time of hand stitches.

Betty, from our mystery quilt group, has inspired me to do the Civil War Block of the Week from Barbara Brackman.

I cut out the blocks on Thurs & Fri, and then spent part of Friday and most of Saturday (while listening to conference) sewing them together. Some went really fast and others I had to pick out and try it again.

The blocks come out every Saturday, so after I got the 13 done, I went back to the site and downloaded the last one. I am fascinated by the site and the stories she is adding to the blog. This is the Sesquicentennial year of the Civil War and this is a work of history.

This is the state birds and flowers quilt top that is one of the treasures Dena left in the basement. It was beautifully painted with fabric paints. No one in the family seems to know if Dena painted it or if her mother did, but I quilted it to give to the first of Gary's grandchildren that gets married.

I am pleased to present another long time coming finish! These little miniature quilts are called "cracker jacks" and were designed by Kaye Evans of Utah. They are just so cute! The sunglasses and spoon were placed in the photo to give you some perspective on how small they are. The largest one is 12 1/2".

I just need to add two side borders in cream. They are cut and ready. I hope to get the back pieced and start basting it for quilting tonight.

P.S. It is no longer "coffin" shaped. I just couldn't like the old shape so I picked it apart and ended up with this -- much much better. I think it turned out pretty ok for a brown bag fabric swap (fabrics not of my choosing) combined with old orphan stack-n-wack blocks. It is approximately a "full" sized bed quilt. I think I'll use it to snuggle on the couch (like I ever have time to do that). #140

This addition is all applique! I basted the swags. stems and flowers in place and machine appliqued them on. Went so much faster.

Only the small buds and flower centers are hand appliqued.

The center is driving me nuts, so I think I am going to take it out and re-do it. Hopefully it won't take 6 weeks to redo.

I would classify 2 as NY Beauties.

My Priceless Quilt Group is making Dear Jane. We are finally at a spot where three of us (Theresa, Faye, and I) are very close together. I just finished E2 and they are working on E8 this week. I have six to catch up. From this point we are committing to one block per week.

I am also excited to say that Linda and Lorna plan to start on E8 and continue forward with us.

I finished 3 more Dear Jane blocks.

D-13 Field of Dreams took 10 min and has 5 pieces. This is definitely the easiest Dear Jane block there is. I paper-pieced it.

E-1 Aunt Exie's Phlox took 1 hour & 45 min. and has only 5 pieces. It is needle-turn applique and "I love it"! I made it at the Priceless quilters gathering. I prepped it, and while I was prepping E-2, my good friend Linda stitched it down for me.

E-2 Merry May took 1 hr and 20 min. & has 11 pieces in it. It is needle-turn applique in the center and rotary pieced on the borders.

A UFO finish and other progress...Deana

I am happy to say that I finished my February UFO. Horray!! I am 2 for 2 -- 2 months 2 finishes. This quilt will now move to the "needs quilted" list.

I also completed another Dear Jane block. It needs a little fine tuning on one point, though. D-12 Crossed Swords has 27 pieces and took 1 hour.

Next up is Brown Bag. I had a strange number of blocks to work with and ended up with this shape. Originally I thought I would take the four remaining blocks and place them in the four corners. There is a problem though, I DON'T LIKE IT.

Next I played with halfing them instead -- better -- but I still don't think its right.

I think the last pictures (below) is closer to what I'm looking for. I will need to half the blocks and remove the navy border, but I think it will work. I will also have to duplicate two of them because I don't have enough.

BOM Month 2 complete: Ann

Those 112 little squares made 28 4 inch lattice squares. There are 15 colors, and there are 4 different greens, so there is a green stripe in each lattice square. I don't think any 2 squares are alike. It took a lot longer than I had planned to get them sewn together. It would take less time if I did not have to pick out so much. Those little corners have to be so exact and ALL the seams have to be a strict 1/4 inch, or they don't fit.

I am pleased with how well it turned out. There are 6 blocks on each side and 8 on the top and bottom. (I forgot to rotate it 180 degrees, so it is upside down.) Now I can work on my Mystery block.

Block of the Month: Ann

Just so you don't think I am just sitting around, I am sharing.

I decided to try another block of the month from the Quilt Show, and this one looked like a challenge for me.

As you can see, the first challenge was keeping my template in place and appliquing all the parts on it. I did not realize how far off center the bottom was until I pressed and trimmed the block to set it into the square. 6 weeks of applique is not coming off, and I will just have to deal with it....

Those pieces are so small for the slats. They were made by sewing strips of each of the fabrics together, then cutting them to these small sections, then sewing those together to get the correct length. This is part of month 2.

The other part of month 2 is a border of lattice. They look similar to what Marie did for the 1st rule of the DOD Mystery quilt.What a job!!!! 112 strips of 1 3/4 X 4 inch, 7 or 8 of each fabric.
Then 112 3" squares, cut diagonally down the middle.
Next, paper piece those 112 into squares, trimming them to 2 1/2" squares.
This part only took 2 whole days.
Next it will be putting them together to form the lattice border.
March looks like more applique, so who knows how long that will take!

I made two more hearts for the Block Lotto. This isn't my favorite block, but it would still be fun to win. I love Velentines Day but for some reason I'm really not into hearts or red and pink (Valentine color) quilts. I do like that these hearts are a variety of colors.

I have been busy this week. Below is a selection of fabrics I found in my stash to help me fulfill the Dorinda Mystery #3 rule. I must use a fabric or color I wouldn't normally use. My mystery quilt is all done in batiks so I thought any of these novelty prints would certainly fit the (not normally use) rule. Below I have tropical birds, Star Spangled Banner music, pink (I don't like pink), frogs, and the very ugly fruit & vegetable print. Next to that is a netting type fabric and then a silky grey. Hmmm. I think I will just ponder ideas for them for a couple of days.

Next is the progress of my Brown Bag quilt. I have come a long way because I now have blue borders around all the blocks and all the setting blocks stripped and cut for the star points. Do you see that very ugly fruit and vegetable fabric above? Well, it is the main fabric in my stack -n- wack fabric below. I'm actually REALLY liking this brown bag quilt and its journey.

I've also been making string hearts for the Block Lotto. This is my first completed one and there are others well on their way.

Deana: Dear Jane & Hexagon Progress

D-11 Snow Crystal: 33 pieces and 45 minutes. I reconstructed this block for paper piecing. It was a cinch. I hoped to complete two Dear Jane blocks this week and YIPPEE, I did. I will add numbers and the name to this post later.

Dear Jane Quilt Grand Total so far: 1134 pieces and 42 hrs 57 min.

I also hoped to get my hexagon quilt this far and I did. Goals and goal accomplishments are so wonderful! This hexagon quilt was made from a pannel fabric. It will have enough blocks for two quilts. I am trying to decide if I want to reverse the red and cream fabrics which would give the second quilt a red background. For some strange reason, this quilt looks more stunning in the photo than in person.

Funny, you can faintly see my snowman hexagon quilt on the wall behind it. It is an addicting pattern.

Dreams

I think I have been abducted by quilt aliens. I am now dreaming of creating quilts. I usually can't remember what I created in my sleep, but I woke up this morning at 3 am, having a dream about a quilt creation. I got up and drew it out on paper. The details are sketchy, still, but the main idea is on paper. I dreamed I was making a "Windows to My Heart" quilt. It had large window panes with pictures of my favorite things instead of glass. In the center was a large red heart. Oh the possibilities!

MARIE'S DORINDA QUILT IS FINISHED!!

This is a happy day for me!! Finally, after 2-1/2 years of work, my Dorinda quilt is finished. I started working up my pattern in August, 2008 and finished piecing it May 31, 2010. I started hand quilting it June 2010 and finished quilting and binding February 9, 2011.

I spent many hours doing applique. I took it with me everywhere I went for months and worked on it whenever I could. The quilt is 42" square and there are 1750 pieces in this quilt. The sunbursts are a combination of machine and hand piecing, and the applique is needle turn applique.

The best part has been getting to know Ann, Lyn and Deana better as we each did our own "Dorinda" quilt, and also learning about our ancestor Dorinda Melissa Moody Slade who created the pattern in the first place.

The first picture was taken outside, and the second inside. There certainly is a difference in the way the colors look.

Notice the quarter on the right side, which puts the size in perspective.

I'm glad I made this quilt, but I don't intend to make another like it.

Dying to Brown Bag

Ok, so one of my brown bag fabrics was just THE WRONG COLOR for the fabrics I found to go with it so... I decided to dye it. Originally I thought I would just tea dye it, but I didn't have any tea and didn't feel up to a trip to town. Instead, I got out my trusty old Dharma fabric dying products. They really come in handy when you live in a rural area sometimes.

The photo below shows the magazine I order out of (have literally spent hours dreaming in this catalog) and the products needed for dying. Here are the steps I follow:

1. Wash the fabric in Synthrapol to remove any excess products that may be on it. This prepares commercial fabrics to accept the dyes.

2. Make some chem water to dissolve the dye powders in. It is made up of urea and water.

3. Make a soda ash/water mixture to presoak the fabric in so they will accept the dyes.

4. Dye the fabric in the urea/water/dye powder mixture. I used Dharma Golden Brown hoping to darken the pink.

5. Let sit for 24 hours in the dye cup.

6. Rinse and machine wash in synthrapol again.

7. Wash in Retayne to set the dyes.

These babies DO NOT RUN OR FADE-- wonderful!

Below is my pink fabric in the dye cup after 24 hours. It looks much darker then the look I was going for.

Now it is orange/brown. The fabric really isn't as pretty but it is the right color for my project.

Below is all of my Brown Bag project fabric. The first 4 on the left were the ones sent to me. The rest are ones from my stash. The colors go nicely together (no pink). The blocks are a UFO that were made approx. 12 years ago. The photo is a quilt I found on the internet which models the pattern I am making.

DORINDA GIRLS: do you recognize the fabric on the far right (orange)? It was one at our first retreat at Marie's that no one else wanted but me.

Brown Bag allows us to purchase one fabric. I bought the background fabric the blocks are sitting on. Fun Fun Fun

I made up another Dear Jane block last night. This one is D-10 Battlefield and took me 45 minutes. It has 42 pieces in it and was nearly entirely paper pieced. I have to wonder, since Jane made this quilt around the time of the civil war, what her thoughts were when she created this block pattern.

I also finished assembling my Dear Jane rows last night. They are not joined together, though.

I also FINALLY completed Jessi's quilt top and have it ready to baste for quilting. It has turned out lovely.

This little birdhouse is to die for! I like the close-up of the tree limb. It is inspiring ideas for me in my barn quilt.

Hi daughters of Dorinda. I thought you would enjoy these pictures. I went to the county archives to look up information on our ancestor Lewis Lloyd and his family. While there I looked at the displays they had about early Tennessee life. Here are some quilts and a picture of antique irons. The quilt with 1940's movie stars is hand embroidered.

For anyone who is not following the Dorinda Mystery, I thought I'd post my finish for you to see.

Rule number 1 required a 12" block with at least 4 flying geese and we could use any technique we wanted.

Here is what I did:

Can you see my flying geese? There are 22.

The silo is paper-pieced. It has 154 pieces in it so far and will have more when I complete it in another section to be added to the bottom. I painted the top of the silo with fabric paints and did threadwork for the tree and bird. I will maybe add some leaves later because I want an early autumn look. The barn is paper pieced also. I added the hexagon shaped window after rule #2 came out so this window would match the second block.

SO MUCH FUN!!!
