One monthly goal August is complete!

I blogged about this one earlier but needed a linkup post for the party.  The linkup to One Monthly Goal August can be found here.

About three years ago I had the opportunity to teach my students an "extension" class.  Every teacher taught one, and we could teach anything we wanted.  Since we have a sewing classroom at school, I decided to teach piecing.  I selected these patterns because there is a ton of room for error and even seam allowances that are not accurate.  My students made the blocks in this quilt!  I will admit that I did piece the stars in the barn because they were very small pieces.

I also wanted to mention that most of the fabric came from my Mom.  She cannot sew anymore because of dementia, so she chose to give some of her fabric to me.  I asked her permission to use it for this project.  Mom can still sew amazingly well, she just needs help because she gets confused as to which pieces to sew to what.  It is hard for me to see her struggle because she has always been super woman.  Mom works harder than any woman I have ever met!  Mom could multitask with ease and do anything faster than anyone most of her life.  I miss the old her but still love her!

This quilt is a 53 x 66.  I pulled patterns from two books to make it.  One Sister Designs has so many patterns I love.  I don't buy patterns often, but I have many of these.

  1. I used to teach 4-H years ago and taught countless girls how to sew. We even did a quilting club once. What a wonderful project for your students.

  8. Well done on teaching piecing to your class. Dementia is not so fun, especially when you see a parent go from being so strong to very dependent. My dad lives with it too.

  9. What a great class to teach the kids. Probably something totally different for most of them. It turned out beautifully.

  10. That is adorable and such a great finish! I love the barns combined with the trees. I'm so sorry that your mom has to deal with dementia - it's such a horrible thing, and hard on you and the rest of the family, too. Glad she can still sew with help, and also see this fun quilt made with her fabric!

  11. What an awesome quilt! Love that your students made it. Love even more that the fabrics came from your mom. It must be so hard to watch her struggle but she is still there for you and you for her! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
